The Benefit Oyster Roast is an annual fundraiser to benefit an individual or family in the greater Fredericksburg community. The Oyster Roast has been held annually for over 30 years and is currently sponsored and hosted by Fairview Baptist and River Club churches in conjunction with White Oak Equipment, Inc.
Since its inception, over $1 million has been raised to help others in our community. The event is unique in that there is no charge to attend the event; rather donations are accepted at the door or in advance. All donations go to the family or individual selected as the beneficiary, as expenses for the event are paid for by various individuals, companies, and organizations in the area.
MEET THE RECIPIENT, TERRI SCHANTZ
Terri Schantz survived COVID-19, but she and her family will deal with its devastation for the rest of her life. She was among the first people in the Fredericksburg area to contract the disease, which resulted in her contracting pneumonia, being on a ventilator, suffering a stroke, and developing a blood clot that required that all of the fingers on her right hand be amputated. Since leaving the hospital last May, she moved in with her daughter Brandi Banks, her husband, and their four children. With her Medicaid expiring and limitations on therapy sessions provided by her insurance, Terri feels truly blessed to be the beneficiary of this year’s Oyster Roast and would use proceeds to pay out-of-pocket for therapy, doctor visits, medication, and transportation to appointments. As stated by her daughter, “This is what a survivor looks like. It’s not like getting a cold or getting the flu and getting better. Their lives are changed forever.” (adapted from The Free Lance-Star)
