Volunteer Open House

This battlefield is directly across the street from Zoar Baptist Church, at 31391 Zoar Rd Locust Grove, VA 22508.

Are you interested in learning more about the Mine Run Campaign and the Battle that was fought at Payne’s Farm? Would you like to be a volunteer and share this knowledge with visitors? Are you interested in doing research or helping to maintain the property? Are you good with technology and like to do computer work? Come and out visit with us on Saturday, May 3, and sign up to become an FOWB volunteer. We have various programs and events throughout the year, and we would love to have you on board to help!

What do our amazing volunteers do? You have seen them setting up Information tents and answering questions about various battles in the area, and you probably have seen them out on the trails, making sure the trails are clear and safe. But what else do they do? Is there something you would enjoy doing with them?

There is actually quite a bit of work that goes on behind the scenes. Some volunteers research genealogy lines, others research troop movements and locations, others research history in the area…Yes, you will often find us wandering around in cemeteries! We love cemeteries!

Some send out press releases for various events and keep up with Facebook and social media, and, of course, the website needs to stay up to date on everything. We are truly grateful for our wonderful webmaster, Deborah Newman!

We are learning about Invasive Species and Bird Habitats, and pollinator gardens, as Payne’s Farm is an excellent site for those activities. We are working with the American Battlefield (ABT) Land Stewardship Manager, Tom Saielli, on controlling invasive species, and we have various groups asking to come out and help us for service projects.

FOWB board members will be on hand at Payne’s Farm from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM on Saturday, May 3, to visit with you and tell you about our wonderful organization. Come out and say Hi and check out this beautiful property owned and preserved by the ABT. FOWB works closely with ABT, and we are honored to help protect this hallowed ground.

Park Day at Payne’s Farm

It’s Park Day! Every year, the American Battlefield Trust hosts an event called Park Day, where volunteers come out and help clean up parks around the country. FOWB is focusing on Payne’s Farm currently, and we will have volunteers on hand that day to clean up trash, clear out debris, and help maintain the trail to ensure that this battlefield stays clean and safe for people and wildlife. Please wear sturdy shoes and bring gloves, clippers, and rakes if you have them.

Bug spray is recommended, and you might want to bring hand sanitizer in case you need to use the porta potty!

FOWB will provide water and light snacks!

We will be meeting in the Payne’s Farm Parking area, across the street from Zoar Baptist Church at 31334 Zoar Road. Parking is limited, and additional parking is available in the church lot.

Registration is not required for this event. Just show up and be ready to work!

We hope to see you there.

WARM UP IN FEBRUARY WITH OLD DOMINION HUMANE SOCIETY’S VALENTINE PUPPY KISSES, YOGA, SATURDAY STROLLS AND SUNDAY HIKES

Old Dominion Humane Society (ODHS) invites the public to warm up this winter with a Puppy Booth, yoga, Saturday Strolls and Sunday Hikes. Whether it’s puppy snuggles or exercise or an invigorating stroll/hike, ODHS volunteers will be on hand to make every event fun in February.

Saturday Stroll (February 1, 8, 15, 22) – Begin the weekend with a Saturday Stroll, where the public meets at the ODHS doors at 8:40 a.m. Volunteers will match one of the smaller rescue dogs with individuals. The dogs will hitch a ride in participants’ cars, as they make their way in a caravan to a local trail. This activity is at a relaxed pace and gives a chance for the public to meet the dogs available for adoption and provide the canines with social interaction and exercise. The Saturday Stroll ends at 11:40 a.m.

Sunday Hikes (February 2, 9, 16, 23) – A popular and invigorating way to begin the day, the Sunday Hikes are a chance to explore local trails and meet fellow dog lovers. Meet at the ODHS center at 8:40 a.m., and the volunteers will find the perfect four-legged friends to accompany participants, who will transport them in their cars. This is an ideal hike for the rescues, who need to “unleash” their energy. The Sunday Hike ends at 11:40 a.m.

Puppy Yoga at Awesome Possumz (February 2) – For this beginner-friendly, low- impact yoga class, puppies will be available for cuddles. Yoga class is 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and puppy cuddles are 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. The cost is $28, which includes a gift bag and puppy playtime. Twenty percent of the proceeds goes to the ODHS rescue dogs. Meet at Awesome Possumz at 211 William Street in Fredericksburg.

Puppy Yoga at ODHS (February 8) – ODHS thinks all yoga classes are better with puppy cuddles, and this beginner class is a perfect introduction to both. The fee is $20 per participant and $35 for two. All ages are welcome, so bring a friend or a child. The doors open at 5:30 p.m., and yoga is from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. ODHS is located at 3602 Lafayette Boulevard in Fredericksburg. All proceeds from the event go to the care and comfort of the rescue dogs.

Valentine Puppy Kisses at Spotsylvania Towne Centre (February 8) – Join ODHS at Spotsylvania Towne Center, where puppies will be available to snuggle and give kisses in the “kissing booth” from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The public can warm up for Valentine’s Day and help the rescues through their donations. Spotsylvania Towne Centre is located at 137 Spotsylvania Mall Drive in Fredericksburg.

“The public is invited to all of these events, and it’ll be a treat for the rescue dogs to visit with them,” said Chrissy Blake, ODHS founder. “All proceeds go to the rescues’ care, including vaccinations, examinations, medication, microchipping, feeding and more. These events are in addition to our regular adoption events on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.”

ODHS is located at 3602 Lafayette Boulevard in Fredericksburg. Adoption events are Wednesdays from 5-7 p.m., Fridays from 6-8 p.m. and Saturdays from 11-3 p.m. Applications in advance are preferred and take priority over walk-ins. For more information about the dogs available for adoption and adoption applications, as well as upcoming events, volunteering, fostering and donating items, visit https://www.olddominionhumanesociety.org.

Program tickets are $5 for FAM members and $8 for non-members. All attendees over the age of three must purchase a ticket. Bomba In The Square

The Fredericksburg Area Museum (FAM), in partnership with Semilla Cultural, celebrates the start of Hispanic Heritage Month with Bomba In The Square. This program is an introduction to the traditional Afro-Puerto Rican dance and music style, bomba. Dating back to the seventeenth century, bomba is a percussion-driven artform consisting of drums, maracas, and wooden sticks called cuás, for banging the sides of the drums. Dancers improvise movements that the lead drummer follows and interprets simultaneously as the drum beats. Bomba In the Square will take place at the FAM in historic Market Square (907 Princess Anne Street) on Saturday, September 24th. This FREE event starts with a bomba class with live music from 4 pm – 4:45 pm and concludes with a 4:45 pm-6 pm bomba jam session where drum music will be played, and participants are encouraged to dance and sing! Bomba In the Square is a family-friendly event, and all are welcomed! Please wear comfortable shoes and be ready to move. Instruments are provided but feel free to bring drums, cuás (wooden sticks), and/or maracas. In the case of inclement weather, the program will be rescheduled to Sunday, September 25th.

Merry Trees Open House

The Fredericksburg Area Museum (FAM) is pleased to announce the sixth annual Merry Trees exhibit. FAM’s gallery spaces will be filled with fifteen miniature trees decorated by the second-grade students at Hugh Mercer and Lafayette Elementary Schools. Each tree is inspired by a children’s book the students have read in the classroom.

FAM is excited to continue this partnership with Fredericksburg City Public Schools. This exhibition is a celebration of art, literature, the holiday season, and Fredericksburg’s elementary students. Merry Trees will be on display at the FAM (907 Princess Anne St, Fredericksburg, VA) from November 20th through December 28th, 2021.

We invite everyone young and old to come to the FREE Merry Trees Open House on Friday, December 3rd. From 5pm – 7:30pm, visitors will have an opportunity to see each class’s tree, participate in a family holiday I Spy game, and visit with Santa in the museum’s galleries.

As we continue to work to keep our community safe, attendees are required to wear a mask, regardless of vaccination status, and maintain social distancing.

Since 2004, AFSP’s Out of the Darkness Walks have built a movement to raise awareness and funds to fight this leading cause of death. Together, our community sends the message that you are never alone, that healing is possible, and when we connect, we create hope.

Our community’s dedication is stronger than ever as we introduce the Fredericksburg Out of the Darkness Experience. This year, the AFSP Virginia Chapter will host activities for you to safely connect, support one another, and share stories and life-saving resources. No matter what your connection to suicide, by joining the Greater Fredericksburg Experience, you can show people that we are strong, we are resilient, and we are hopeful.
